There is no single, authoritative, accessible and easily used source of information about historical mining activities across Canada. This project, led by the Underground Mining Society, involves collating scattered information in the public domain in order to provide a digital database that includes a historical timeline of mining operations dating back to the 1700's. This resource will be a tool for exploring and understanding the impact of our influential industry on the development of Canada. The goal will be to eventually create interactive maps that include mine locations, commodities, mining method, and dates. A prototype of this knowledge base is ready, and to move forward, all of CIM can help fill gaps with their own knowledge.
