Innovation for Aggregate Road Stabilization Provides Improved Surface Structure, Lower Maintenance and Control of Fugitive Dust

Aggregate-based road building design and maintenance are high capital and operational expense items in new and established mine operations.  Impacts on road equipment efficiency, maintenance and longevity are key operational concerns, as is the generation of fugitive dust for both vehicle and operator safety as well as important community impacts are key aspects.   Many different chemical technologies, with a wide range of environmental impacts, and throughout the world have been used to improve the road surface in order to address these aspects, to reduce road maintenance and control fugitive dust.  Due to variety of surface composition, usage, maintenace practices and weather impacts it is difficult to provide science-based data, interpretation and conclusive evidence of performance.  By understanding the key technical critieria that road building engineers utilize to construct quality roads, one can compare both laboratory and field data to objectively compare performance characteristics.  Key impacts of chemical treatment benefits such as optimal  density, structural strength (CBR-related), weather resistance and dustiness qualities have been studied and results provided.  Real-world case studies  in British Columbia on underground and surface roads are provided, as well as environmental impact comparisons.
