The system described in this paper is novel in its basic approach to automation in that it carries out the functions normally performed by the human operator in controlling the motions of a standard, wound rotor motor hoist. No supplementary dynamic braking or power equipment is used, the only additions to the existing power equipment being a small, fast.acting dise brake on the pinion shaft and an extra point of rotor resistance.
