B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Copper Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of z,ioo feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute
