This paper, written to commemorate the tenth anniversary of oxygen steelmaking at Dominion Foundries and Steel, Ltd., records the progress made in the manufacture of L-D oxygen steel and its world-wide acceptance by both steelmaker and user. The original pilot-plant testing is discussed, a well as the range of charge materials, the process control methods and materials. handling. Dofasco, the first steelmaker in North America to install an oxygen steelmaking furnace, has now switched almost entirely to this new process.
