This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distributions on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an explanation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage stoping.
