Research Potentials for the Coal lndustry

CIM Bulletin, 1959

A VETERAN newspaperman once summed up a lifetime of observation and experience in these words: "What man can imagine, man can do". That statement might weil serve as the theme of a talk on research potentials of the coal industry or any other industry. It is not my intention today to make a series of predictions of things to come. Experience of the past few decades has shown that long-range predictions made before engineering g roups usually fall short of the mark; th at is, the actual technical achievements in any period tend to surpass the boldest predictions that any responsible engineer would have made, say twenty years earlier
