In t his Presidential Address, M.S. N.S., the recent advances made in longwall coal mining, and t heir effect
on productivity, a re reviewed. Wide-web and narrow-web mechanical mining machines are discussed, and the advantages of t he non-cyclical longwall mining system are studied. The paper concludes with a
word on automation in longwall mining.
