J. J. Fitzpatrick Senior lndustrial Engineer, Quebec Cartier Mining Company, Port Cartier, Quebec

This paper deals with the methods used by Quebec Cartier Mining Company in the evaluation and selection of new haulage equipment and in increasing the productivity of the existing fleet. Selection of new equipment is based upon the comparison, for each mode! under consideration, of the capital investment required and the estimated operating costs and production rate. The calculation of the production rate is based on a widely used estimating procedure. Actual operating conditions considered in the method include: payload, haul distance, road grade, rolling resistance, loading and dumping times, and operational efficiency. A digital computer is used to handle the large volume of repetitive calculations required.
