Northern Ecosystems and Northern Development
R. W. WEIN, NRC Post-Doctoral Fellow, L. C. BLISS, Professor of Botany, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alta.
Northern ecosystems are dominated by a harsh physical environment which dictates a need for biological adaptation. As yet, it is unknown just how these adapted plants and animals will tolerate industrial development. Our work, sponsored by university, government and industry, is part of an effort to evaluate this developmental impact. Our present studies and the results to date will be discussed. Other problems to which the environmental student may address himself in the future to ensure against environmental degradation will be suggested.
