This paper out lines t he principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and t he depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined.
