Managing Occupational Hygiene Hazards on Mine Sites

An increased focus is being placed on the health aspect of health and safety, and mining companies are actively looking to minimize worker exposures to hazardous environments at their sites. Occupational health and hygiene (OH&H) practices are important for minimizing these exposures. Many sites face the challenge of competing interests between local regulatory requirements and corporate requirements, as mining companies often have operations in different jurisdictions. This presentation will introduce an effective approach for managing OH&H practices, including conducting a baseline gap assessment, at the site level. Six key OH&H program elements will be considered as well as best practice criteria for each element. Common themes and gaps in OH&H practices will be discussed, as well as the path forward for continuous improvement.
