Maintenance of Large Shovels in Open-Pit Mining at Quebec Cartier

CIM Bulletin, 1969

G. P. PROULX, Assistant Superintendent - Mechanical, Quebec Cartier Mining Company, Gagnon, Que.

Quebec Cartier Mining Company operates ten 8-cu.yd. electric shovels to extract iron ore from its open-pit mine in northern Quebec, where the temperature has averaged 27°F during the past nine years. Experience gained since the start of operations in 1959 has shown the need for sound equipment specifications designed to meet the existing mining conditions along with constant training of manpower and engineering assistance to improve operating costs and equipment availability.
