CIM Bulletin, Vol. 71, No. 793, 1978

E. Goodwin, Chief Chemist, Noranda Mines Limited, Bell Copper Division, Granisle, B.C.

The mechanics of formation of wear-metal suspensions in lubricants is discussed, along with the relationship of the concentration of the metals and other particles to the wear of lubricated machinery parts. The importance of particle and suspension analysis of used lubricants in a preventative maintenance program is stressed, in particular with regard to mobile equipment in a mining operation.
