A new innovation in rock support-Friction Rock Stabilizers

In the two years since their introduction, Friction Rock Stabilizers have replaced 40 per cent of the previously used fixtures in the metal and non-metal mines in the United States. The Friction Rock Stabilizer, or "Split Set", is a mechanical rock stabilizing system which uses friction to prevent rock movement. The Split Set is a tapered, rolled, steel tube that is slotted along its length. As it is driven into a drilled hole smaller than its diameter, it compresses, pre-loading the surrounding rock. This paper discusses the uses and acceptance of the friction rock stabilizer in mines in the United States.
